The signature says the scene is from Ärentuna, north of Uppsala, where Liljefors stayed in a cottage in winter 1883–84. There were many black grouse that year in the wet fields, and the goshawk – common in those days – had plenty of prey. Liljefors shot a young hawk and used it as a model, along with grouse. He mounted them in the forest and painted everything outdoors. Grey-white paint applied thinly with a half-dry brush completes the impression of cold winter and swirling snow as the hawk strikes.
