The print was published in Nuremberg by Friedrich Campe and is subtitled in different versions with either Würzburg or Frankfurt. Voltz was not an eyewitness to the events, apparently based his visual representation on reports from the time and has evidently drawn a fictitious setting, because the buildings cannot be clearly assigned to Frankfurt or Würzburg.
The whole picture illustrates an enormous excess of violence. Apartments are looted and chairs, porcelain, pots, bottles, other household items, drawers, a sheet and a large mirror are thrown onto the street. The illustrator suggests that women were also involved in the riots. According to Amos Elon, the man in a vest and tailcoat hitting the Jew on the right could perhaps be a pharmacist or a school teacher.[40] From the left you can see cavalry entering the city. In the background, several Jewish men with tricorn and top hats and beards can be seen being attacked by a mob armed with two-pronged pitchforks, wooden clubs and an axe. One man is shooting into the crowd from a window. He has apparently climbed up the apartment from which he is shooting using a ladder.
