In the early summer of 1219 the Danish king Valdemar II went to Estonia with an army and fleet, on a combined crusade/landgrab. On June 15 the Estonians attacked and the legend tells us that a red and white flag (the present Danish flag Dannebrog) descended from the sky and led the Danes to victory. Later historians have pointed out that the flag is more or less identical to the banner of the Knights Hospitallers, often seen on crusades at the time. Colour lithograph on paper, glued on cardboard.
